The joys of having a home office are numerous. You have your own place to sit uninterrupted (most of the time) at the computer, working on projects or just catching up on email.
If you work at home, you know how important having a home office is, and how hard it is to get any work done when your space is cluttered. While many people enjoy having an organized yet chaotic space, most of us prefer to have things neat and tidy, with clutter out of sight and therefore, out of mind.

Use Separate Space. One of the biggest rules of having a home office is to keep it separate from the rest of your life. If your home office is the dining room table, kitchen bar, or nightstand in the bedroom, then you are in for an uphill battle. Setting aside even just a corner of a room for all of your stuff will help you keep things organized. You will no longer have children's toys or dinner cups from last night's meal sitting in your way. Of course, if you have your office separate and have still amassed too much "stuff," keep reading.
Invest in Storage. While you may shy away from large storage units, corner office desks or filing cabinets, consider the benefits they provide. Most of the clutter in a home office is due to paperwork and objects that aren't immediately needed being in the way of your work space. Storage provides a "home" for these items until they are needed, and it can add beauty to your office as well. Many inexpensive storage units are made to look like furniture, and even filing cabinets are available in a dresser style for easier file access. At the minimum, invest in a bookcase where you can store decorative baskets filled with papers or overstocked office supplies.
Throw Things Away. Investing in storage isn't going to help you much if you keep everything to ever cross your desk. Even parents realize at some point that they can't keep every drawing their child has ever made. Keep bank statements and other tax and financial documents for the recommended period of time, but throw out or shred what is no longer needed. This includes dumping old electronic equipment that is no longer working -- but be sure to look for a special electronic recycling location, as it is illegal in most places to dispose of them in the landfills. The same goes for batteries.
Having a home office is a luxury to many of us who grew up in homes before computers were even invented. Unfortunately, with the boom of technology and the Internet, our ability to find places to put all our gadgets and their accessories has diminished.
